Visit the beguinage in Bruges city centre
The beguinage in Bruges is one of 13 Flemish beguinages awarded world heritage status by UNESCO. The beguinages were built from the 13th century onwards for women who wished to live in a secluded community without taking vows. The courtyard of “Prinselijk Begijnhof Ten Wijngaarde” in Bruges is surrounded by quaint, whitewashed houses, a church and former outbuildings. The current residents of the beguinage are Benedictine sisters and single women.

The Belfry of Bruges is an impressive building dating from the 13th century. This is the most important tower of Bruges, with a height of 83 metres. If you climb the 366 steps, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of Bruges and its surroundings. On your way to the top, you will come across a mediaeval treasure chamber, the impressive music roll operated by the carrilloneur and the keyboard used by the city’s carrilloneur to play the 47 bells.

Every year on Ascension Day the Procession of the Holy Blood passes through the historic city centre of Bruges. More than 1,700 participants fill the city with their music, dance, song and acts.
