Dormio Resort Eifeler Tor is situated in a stunning natural environment with green woods and beautiful hiking areas. It is only a 45-minute drive from our resort to Brühl, which has an impressive UNESCO world heritage site: the 18th century castles Augustusburg and Falkenlust. These beautiful castles are among the earliest examples of Baroque and Rococo architecture in Germany. The two castles and the extensive park have been on the UNESCO world heritage list since 1984. Definitely worth a visit during your holiday in the Eifel!
Augustusburg Castle
Augustusburg Castle was the sumptuous residence of the prince-archbishops of Cologne; it is a unique part of this UNESCO world heritage site. Many famous artists have contributed to building the castle, including Balthasar Neumann. The unique architecture, sculpture, painting and park design make this castle a true highlight.
From 1949, Augustusburg Castle was used as a reception hall by Germany’s president and federal government. Famous state visitors included Queen Elizabeth II, Mikhail Gorbachev, Nelson Mandela and Pope John Paul II. It is now a museum which is open to the public, and a visit is highly recommended!
Falkenlust hunting lodge
On the edge of a remote wood you will find the other part of this UNESCO world heritage site: the Falkenlust hunting lodge. This was the favourite hunting lodge of the prince-elector of Cologne and archbishop Clemens August. The mansion was designed by the court architect François de Cuvilliés and built between 1729 and 1737; its main purpose was to practise falconry. This beautiful lodge is famous for its symmetry and walls decorated with shells and stones. Falkenlust has two floors, which were built in the style of a country house. An exhibition in the adjacent buildings gives you information about the art of falconry and the falconers’ workplace. An interesting activity for young and old!
The linking Schlosspark at this UNESCO world heritage site
Dominique Girard designed the palace gardens, inspired by French garden design, in 1728. The castles on this UNESCO world heritage site are linked by a beautiful lane that runs across the extensive Schlosspark, which gives a stunning effect. Famous artists and architects were involved in laying out the gardens and parks. The Schlosspark is of historical importance because of its unique design with French and English influences and takes a special place on the UNESCO world heritage site.
