The Hallstatt-Dachstein Salzkammergut landscape has been on the UNESCO world heritage list since 1997. The impressive Hallstättersee is right by the Dachstein massif, making this area a popular holiday destination in both summer and winter. In the summer you can enjoy all kinds of activities on the lake, and in the winter this region is a popular winter sports area.
Visit the picturesque village of Hallstatt
The picturesque, quaint village of Hallstatt is world famous and is certainly worth a visit during your stay in Obertraun. It is situated in a beautiful area between Hallstättersee and the Dachstein mountains. The village looks very charming with its little church and narrow streets. In the morning you can take fantastic photographs here of the mist lingering in the stunning mountain landscape.
Tip: The fairy-tale village of Hallstatt also looks very attractive from the water! Hire a boat, a canoe or a SUP board to see this beautiful picture with your own eyes.
Breathtaking views of the Alps
Do you want to enjoy breathtaking views of the Alps? Visit the Five Finger viewing platform near Dachstein Krippenstein. This is probably the most spectacular viewing point in the area; it perches above a steep 400-metre drop. This platform owes its name to the structure’s shape, which resembles a hand with five fingers. The sunny terrace of Dormio Gasthof Höllwirt offers stunning views of Dachstein and the Five Finger viewing platform. You can reach the top by cable car, but you can also walk to the top. If you walk, you can enjoy both the wonderful climb and the fantastic views!
Explore the salt mines
A visit to the salt mines is one of the most interesting day trips in this region. The area around Obertraun is famous for its impressive salt mines. Salt was extracted in the mountains from the Middle Bronze Age onwards. It was a valuable commodity and was therefore called “Austria’s white gold”. There are three salt mines, all definitely worth a visit, in the vicinity of Dormio Gasthof Höllwirt. They are situated in Hallstatt, Hallein and Altaussee. Small trains and slides will take you on a journey of discovery of the salt mines in the Bronze Age. A great adventure for young and old!
Fantastic views of the area from Skywalk Hallstatt “Welterbeblick”
You can also look at the world-famous Hallstättersee and the mountain massifs from above, by visiting the Skywalk. The Skywalk viewing platform is situated on the Hallstatt salt mountain, immediately below the Rudolfsturm, the former defence tower. The platform floats freely at a height of nearly 360 metres above sea level. The views of the beautiful surroundings are very impressive from here!
Tip: The Salzberg cable car will take you to the Skywalk within just a few minutes. Are you an experienced hiker? Go for an adventurous hike to the top!
Enjoy the underground ice palaces
Are you in need of some cooler temperatures in the summer? Or are you looking for an interesting activity in the area for a cloudy or rainy day? Visit one of the caves in the Dachstein region. The ice palaces in Dachstein are one of the main natural landmarks of the Alps! In Dachstein Rieseneishöhle, a giant ice cave, an experienced guide will take you on a walk through magical subterranean Dachstein, full of spectacular ice sculptures and the impressive Ice Chapel. The Dachstein Mammut cave on Schönbergalm and the Koppenbrüller cave in the valley are also among the most beautiful accessible caves in Austria. The average temperature in the caves is between -2 and +6 °C, so warm clothes are definitely recommended!

From Dormio Gasthof Höllwirt it takes an hour and a quarter by car to get to Salzburg. A beautiful city for a cultural day out in the area! Salzburg has an extraordinarily rich history and features many buildings from the Baroque. You will also encounter Mozart and reminders of him and his music everywhere, from his birthplace, squares and statues to the world-famous Salzburger Festspiele. Other popular attractions in Salzburg are the film locations of “The Sound of Music”, the Cathedral and the Hohensalzburg Fortress. In short, Salzburg is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities in Austria and therefore definitely worth a visit during your stay!
